Replacing Domain Controller

By tbearwir ·
My PDC Domain Controller is a 2000 server and I want to replace the 2000 pdc domain with a 2003 pdc domain controller and keep the name and ip of the 2000 pdc domain controller. I prep the forest for 2003 and I promoted the 2003 server to a domain controller. Now I want to transfer the roles from the 2000 PDC to the 2003 domain controller so it will now be the PDC and I want to to use the name and IP Address of the 2000 PDC. How do I do this? Please Help.

Thanks,

Teddy

Transfer all the roles...

...and when you feel like the new machine is ready -- power down the old one. Let the new machine run solo for a while until you feel like it is doing the job like it is supposed to do. At that point, put your old machine back on-line and run dcpromo to demote it. Once you've demoted it -- change the name of that machine to something else (I assume you're still going to use it for something.) Then make sure that the the name (the one you still want to use) of the computer does NOT show up in AD Users and Computers. If it does -- delete it. Once it is gone -- rename your NEW Domain Controller to the old name that your other one had.

Also remember to reboot these machines after each of those steps AND make sure you give AD some time to do its thing.

Thanks, sounds good to me, I plan on making change this weekend, I will let you know how it went. Also, I am planning on using same IP Address used by the old PDC 2000 for the new PDC 2003, I assume that this is not a problem. Correct?

Not only not a problem...

...but I think it's a good idea. You never know which machines may have static IP's set for DNS, WINS, etc. -- right? And since you're going to use the same IP for the new server, you won't have to go around changing any of that stuff on the various machines...

Problems

by tbearwir In reply to Not only not a problem...

Everything went smooth up until point I tried to reuse the name of the old primary domain controller, it kept telling me that the "Account already exist" even throught the machine wasn't in AD or DNS. I gave up after about 2 hors on using the old name and just used the current name of the 2003 DC that I tranferred the roles to and changed the IP Address to the IP Address of the old primary domain controller. If someone else has to do this, I would suggest not tring to use the same name of the old PDC but using its IP.

Thanks again for all your help.
