RIS and a bit more

By tim.rees ·
Hi All,
I hope someone can help with the below 2 queries.

1) I have a XP and 2000 RISsetup which is set to complete unattended, but after it completes I'd like to copy over a file/folder to the location machine from the RISSetup.

2) As the RISsetup are completed Unattended I would like to find a solution that will allow (only) the Machine name to be entered at some point prefereable early on in the installation.

For step one:

If the folder has to be copied after the install and not as part of it, you can use RunOnceEx in the registry. During the install you can execute a reg script with the necessary value like "copy \\server\folder\file.txt to %systemdrive%". This way, after the install is complete and windows starts for the first time, this will take place and remove itself from the registry. I use this to install other programs as part of the install.

For step two:

You need to use a UDF file. You can choose to do this as part of the setupmgr.exe wizard on the computer name screen. You can enter the names or varibles for names you need into this file and each computer will have it's unique name.

Hope this helps. Also MFSN has a great article on Unattended installs of XP if you want to get really in depth on the install.

Thanks for the reponse..
In the end I

Copied the folder to the OS installation directory\%oem%\%1\directory on the RIS server.

I've used the custom CIW screen to enter the machine name.

New Problem - Now I'd like to add a generate a variable during the CIW screens which can be used later to create a file name. Any ideas?
