RNAAPP & internet troubles

By firesheep43 ·
Win 98, SE, custom built box, AMD K6 - very clean machine (yup - used by 72 year old lady just for e-mail and solitaire.....). Original complaint was that PC hangs - freezes cold, after 22 minutes (EXACTLY) on the internet. Occasionally also during solitaire. Hdw diag & burn in reveals nothing noteable. Have completely striped TCP/IP & DUN (files, registry entries, etc see MS Q181599)and reloaded from clean CD, removed modem, drivers, modem software, booted clean, reinstalled with new drivers, updated drivers for vid card, sound card, installed all patches & etc. At the shop, PC ran flawlessly, on internet for 2 days - no hangups. Returned to customer - BAM 22 minutes, pull the plug. Tried monitor, keyb, mouse & UPS from shop on site - same - BAM, 22 minnutes, pull plug. Tested power at site, ok - not even 1v variation over 10 min, phone co & I spent 4 hours - line ok, runs fine, laptop and demo desktop do not lock, no interference from other equip, lights, microwaves, etc. Only noteable item is RNAAPP. At site, I tried running PC with startup items removed from MSCONFIG, though I did this at the shop (standard practice), at site - the machine would hang at the desktop with startup items removed - ctl-alt-del showed Explorer & RNAAPP running. Restored startup items, PC boots ok but RNAAPP runs, ctl-alt-del, kill RNAAPP, within 5 seconds, it returns. Yet modem still dials out. ?! After disconnect, RNAAPP still runs and hangs PC at shutdown. Am I flustered? Uh, well - yeah. Returned the machine to the shop - it runs ok. I am baffled as the problem should not be site specific. What do you all think and how do you control RNAAPP?

The only site specific relevance that I can see is that you did not mention ISP, is it the same at the shop and site, and if same would shop and site be within the same CO. The thought here is that at shop you connected to a ISP port with lower use, at site maybe it hits a crowded modem and thus 22 minutes into the process it "checks" to make sure live active connect and in doing so hits the modem hard thus freeze. I know out there but so are your conditions.

also out there - there was at one time an mail virus which called program and kind of ran it like a service out of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run

possibly also any of the other run variants.

There might be a remnant there. AS to why it would be evident at one place and not another, no comment. Again looking for possibles.

Also I assume that wins and dns are disabled?

Duns now would be 1.4 from lastest updates, is that what is in place?

That's about all the thoughts I can come up with.

This thing was an annoyance back with w95 but never really had a problem with 98SE.

Sorry - did not mention, ISP is the same, same switch & co for that matter. Check registry keys you mentioned, ok, did a virus scan, trend, panda and symantec' online. Clean as a whistle. Yes, WINS & DNS are disabled, ISP assigned IP address. Not sure on the DUNS version. I will check it out. CHeck back - if the DUNS V2.4 does the trick, I'll post it here and yo ucan post another answer to get the points.

Sounds like a stuck wininit.ini program with the RNAAPP hanging, You can try renaming that. Also if system hangs at startup could be the Ram. Much doubtful but worth checking. But it runs ok at shop, and other machines runs great there. If using mcafee for virus check, I would suggest www.antivirus.com and run their free service. This has caught more virus on machines than Norton or Mcafee. ( I am still a norton fan a little ) Hope this helps

Will check wininit.... (box is back at cust site) though if I remember, I looked in there after Norton install, since NOrton sometimes leaves junk. Re the viruses, see my comment on the 1st answer. I sell Norton, but use Trends online svc and for areal thorough check, try www.pandasoftware.com 's free online scan. Also check compressed files and e-mail. Takes forever though. Thanks. Check back Monday or so to see where this prob is at.Chris
