Router edimax LT-6408n can’t connect do the internet;there is a wifi signal

    by Vs3rAbVs3r ·

Hi, I have router – model like in the title and I have a problem: I configured it and I have wifi signal but there is no internet connection. I am trying to somehow deal with it for the whole day but I don’t have more ideas what I did wrong. In windows 10 like I said – I can see wifi signal but Windows tells me something like ,,connected to wifi; no internet connection”. Oh,and when I checked information section on my router page, there was info that router is N/A, so not detected. BUT, when I refreshed the page suddenly I saw information about modem (I have connected huawei e353 usb modem to usb port via some usb switch. I would be grateful for any advice.

If the WAN-port of the router is connected to a LAN-port of the modem via an Ethernet-cable, the WAN light of the router should be on to indicate it’s connected to Internet, the user manual says.
If it’s off, it’s not connected.

      What do you see?

        It’s connected with usb

In reply to Re: connect to Internet

The modem is connected to usb adapter/cable and that usb cable is connected to the usb port in router. (The seller of the router said that you can’t just put modem in usb port and you should put it via usb cable). The problem is the modem has green light and later there is blue light blinking so there is internet connection I presume.

I reset few thing like in video tutorial on youtube and it also did not help. I have been using windows torubleshooter, later in the cmd I reset network, fix socket errors, reset IP logs and DNS.

The modem should be connected to Internet (how exactly depends on the type of connection and the ISP), the router should be connected to the modem by an Ethernet-cable. User manuals are a much better source of technical information than sellers.

For the meaning of LED’s please read the user manuals of the modem and the router. And try your Windows device connected to the modem via an Ethernet-cable in stead of via WiFi.

In your original post you said the *router* didn’t connect to internet. Now you seem to say that your *Windows machine* can’t connect to the internet via the WiFi-router. That’s quite something else. The help you get here can’t be better than your description of the situation.

Assuming the WiFi works (easy to try with your smartphone, please confirm that it works OK) this usually is a setting in Windows or using a wrong WiFi password. What does IPCONFIG on your Windows machine say your local IP-address is?

Yeah, but I found that info in manual (that there are 2 option of connection – via usb cable- router to modem and via ethernet cable). I checked manual one more time and the most strange thing is that even in manual is info that ,,when led blinking – there is activity of wireless network – (data transfer). And the LED is blinking. And what is important, there is the same situation on the other devices – huawei p30 and samsung gt-s (wifi connection without internet).
          IPCONFIG is:
          Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi:
Link-local IPv6 Address: (some parameters [it is my description of course]).

          IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.(another digits cover for safety).
          Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
          Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.(also covered).

That’s fine. It shows the PC (and probably the phones also) are connected to the device (router or modem) that handles the DHCP (giving out IP-addresses).

Now try the connection of your PC/laptop via an Ethernet-cable, both directly to the modem and via the router. How far does tracert come to some website?

I tried to connect router to laptop via ethernet-cable with wifi switch on, and later with the switch off and same damn thing. I mean, laptop is connected but there is no internet connection.
edit: I tried it also with another SIM-card-same thing.
Also, I tried to connect huawei modem directly to laptop and then there was internet connection.

For some reason you still didn’t check if it’s the WiFi or the connection from the router to the modem. That can be done by connecting your laptop with an Ethernet-card to the router.

If it’s fine then, it’s the WiFi.
If it doesn’t work even when all connections are by cable then it’s something in the router or the connection between the router and the modem. Without router it works fine, you said.

Could you please tell me what exactly I should do? As far as I understand you, I should connect router to my laptop with usb and put modem in a laptop usb-hub? And after that I need to share internet with my router by creating internet hotspot in win10? Sorry but it is a lot of informations for me and I don’t get everything.

Since we still don’t know what’s wrong, I can’t tell you what to do. We only know, since your phone doesn’t connect to Internet either, that it isn’t a Windows issue.

So probably it’s the router. Try another one. Or try this with a friend and their modem and their laptop.

I was not able to reply – techrepublic blocked me xD Don’t know why 😅 Anyway, I tried everything you told me and nothing changes. I found some old thread on the other tech-website and some man had the same problem with the same router and modem and he wrote that changing router to a new one will help. But I am just curious why It doesn’t work if router sees the modem? 🤔Thank You for your help! I will be still trying to fix it but I have less motivation every hour 😂

Yes, it’s a command in cmd.

tracert google.com tells what IP-addresses your message passes before it reaches google.com.But it might fail if it can’t find the IP-address of google.com because it has no connection to the internet.

Then try to ping the modem via the router. Ping is a cmd command also, and it expects the IP-address of the target (can be any urls also) as a parameter. Something like:
          ping 192.168.1.1
That 192.168.1.1 is the gateway-IP when connected directly to the modem.
