You'll need to start with the basics.
1. Go to Ebay and buy a 2500 series router. A 2514 will do nicely and will set you back about $150.

2. Go to and go to their books > Subjects > Computers & Internet > Networking > Networks, Protocols & API's > Bridges and Routers section and buy a used book on Cisco IOS.

3. Once you understand the IOS, pickup a used copy of their CCNA series.

That will get you started. After that, I'd recommend trying to get a job in routing or even volunteering at a school to help run their network backbone. After gaining some experience, you'll be able to work your way through the CCNA and CCNP exams and with about 10 years or so of solid experience, you can take the CCIE and consider yourself an master. It's a long road, but financially rewarding thus far.

Good Luck
