Running programs.

By Optimiser ·
I would like to shut down the machine programatically. For that I would need to know how many programs are running. Also I would like to give the user an option of saving (if a word document is open). How do I get a list of all running programs i.e.open windows programatically through VB6? I have tried using the 'SendKeys' function but still could not manage to do it as I did not have a list of all open windows.

Short of writing the code for you?

I assume that your are familiar with the Microsoft Kernal and Power Toys. Got to Microsoft.Com and search on Power Toy. WinTop is parked in my tray.

Andrew Schulman's books are a must for this type of programming. I'm sure he has a web site.

Dr. Dobbs Journal and BYTE are also good for source code, ZDNet slightly less so, but don't rule out articles on good old DOS. Win is still a DOS application.

RegMon and FileMon, including source code is available at http://www.sysinternals.com/

Also watch how DESKTOP.SCF behaves. It should be in your tray. Check Brian Livingston's column in InfoWorld.Com around Labor Day last year to see yours truly's name in print.

BTW, Word, Excel, etc will warn the user to save prior to its shutting down.
