SAN licensing

By TobeJ ·
We have sent out a RFP for a 2+ TB SAN with backup. I have read that standard SAN equipment comes with a standard software such as : Array Management Software, Array Disaster Recovery Software, Switch Management Software, Backup software etc. So licensing for this software is included. My question is this, does each server that you add to the SAN need an additional license? So if I place a RFP for a SAN with 7 servers, if I add an 8th server next week, will there be a license charge to add this hardware to the SAN?

Any help would be appericated..

I would guess it may depend on the manufacturer

but I would think that you generally licence SAN functionality rather than attached servers.

We have a couple of Hitachi Data Systems AMS500s and it's licensed purely on functionality. We have a few extra copy functions which we paid for in addition to the basic stuff that you couldn't work without.

The number of attached hosts or even whether they were 'ix or Windows was never an issue other than for correct product line selection.

You are correct.

You are correct. I have found out that it all depends on the SAN vendor, that licensing can be different for all items - (Depending on what you want). One vendor licenses by how many partitions are in the SAN - Where another it does not matter etc. It all depends on the vendor

Thanks for the help.
