SBS 2003 with Smoothwall firewall

By gregs ·
Anyone running SBS 2003 with Smoothwall firewall? I am setting up a new server and was looking for a good harware firewall and came across the Linux Smoothwall app and was looking at doing this. Anyone have any cons/pros or suggestions?

Assuming you don't have SBS 2003 Premium edition (which will have ISA Firewall built in)
I have successfully set up a variant of smoothwall called ipcop (http://www.ipcop.org/) which was pretty easy to do using a cheap old pc as the firewall machine.

Smoothwall

I have not run Smoothwall as my firewall since I've been running SBS 2003. However, I had great success with it when I had more a "home style" network. As long as you keep the security patches up to date, Smoothwall is a great firewall, in my opinion.

Works great

I use smoothwall at home and IPCop at work and both work fine. There are even some open source extentions that can be downloaded for both to extend the basic funtionality. See http://www.urlfilter.net/

Remember to Download a copt of putty and WinSCP to allow you to interact with the system and keep it up to date outwith the web console!
