ScanDisk

By pmfturner ·
I have been unable to run ScanDisk in Windows 98, because it appears that there are some programs running in the background, that are writing to disk. The error message showing is :-
?ScanDisk how now restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to the drive. Quitting some running programs may enable ScanDisk to finish sooner.?

I think I have identified these programs from pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, but do not know what half of them are, nor can I identify which ones may be writing to disk !

Can somebody please help ?

The background programs are, I think :-

Logitech Desktop Manager Agent
Explorer
Ccapp
Datemanager
Gmt
Lexpps
Realplay
Logitray
Cmesys
Wmencagt
Osa
Stimon
Lvcoms
Incd
Loadqm
Starter
Ptsnoop
Systray
Mdm
Rnapp
Qttask

Restart the computer in safe mode, with nothing running. Scandisk should work fine after that.

As an alternative, you could hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, go to Task Manager, then start killing the various processes running. (DON'T KILL EXPLORER!) Then runSCANDISK.

1) In task manager, you want nothing running except systray and explore. Windows only requires these two to run. If you are connected to the network at the time, you might also want to disconnect the network cable temporarily.

2) Your best option for starting and finishing SCanDisk quickly, is to boot to SafeMode (press F8 before Windows loads and you should have the option to boot to Safe Mode without network support and run your scandisk there).

Actually, I have found that allowing Systray to run will also cause that to happen. Personally, I do Ctrl-Alt-Del and close down each item one by one until nothing is left except Explorer and Nav. I then disable the Virus Scanning and Pause my Task Scheduler. Then I seem to have no problems running ScanDisk or Defrag. Good luck!

If what everyone else is saying about closeing almost everything except explorer doesnt work try updating your virus protection software I say this because i have had more than one instance of scandisk not running because a backdoor program like a trojan was running and that keeps scan disk from running.
