I've run into what appears to be aworm that installed itself on a friend"s computer. It takes over IE6.0 popping up about every 20 minutes.opening the SearchMeUp.net homepage.also resets default home page. I can find no info on this problem. 2 different Virus scans do not detect it (both McAfee, and Trend-micro)anybody else run across this one?

Spyware! It's spyware, not a virus.
www.lavasoftusa.com
Go there and download/install Ad-Aware to clean it.

So a little more research.
I found that SearchMeUp.com is a member of the CoolWebSearch family that is a big spyware pain. You can't just run Ad-Aware against it to remove it. Go to this page for details:

http://tinyurl.com/veb9

Now, you said you have SearchMeUp.net which is different. I checked the WHOIS registration, and it is also different between the .net and the .com
The .net that you have is registered to a guy in Russia, whereas the .com is registered to someone in Cyprus.
But, the writeup on CoolWebSearch says that "there are now nearly 10,000 Coolwebsearch affiliates" so this could be what you are experiencing. So, go to that URL I just posted, get the CoolWebSearch cleaner, run that, then run Ad-Aware.
Good luck

goto www.lavasoftusa.com and download Adaware. Install it, update it, and run it... Clean malicious files out.

Lastly, goto www.google.com, services and tools link. Download Googles toolbar - 1. It's free 2. It stops pop-ups.

This should get your system on the up and up.
