Second HD, drive letters are a "no show"

By brifd1 ·
I bought a 2nd, larger HD for the purpose of transferring the info from the 1st, smaller HD to it. The 1st HD is partitioned via Partition Magic. I partitioned the 2nd HD, which PM staff said was done correctly. However, only 1 drive letter shows upin Explorer for the 2nd HD. The support tech didn't know the solution. How do I get the others to show up? What are the sequential steps follow to install Windows on the 2nd HD, changing the jumpers, etc.?

A few questions for you. You said that you partitioned the HD. Did you create a drive in that free space now? It would be an extended drive with a logical drive. If this was done, then the drive would show in Windows. Second question, what version of Windows are you running?

take drive 1 and make sure it is at the end of the IDE cable and set the jumper to Master. Take drive 2 and put it in the Middle IDE Cable connection and set its jumper to slave. As always, make sure you have the latest BIOS for your PC. Boot up andcheck to see if they both show in the BIOS properly. Go into PM and make sure both are Primary partitions and they are fat32 or NTFS if NT or 2K. If that doesn't work switch both HD jumpers to cable select. Let me know if it is still a problem.

I need some more information,
What kind of PC do you have, did your BIOS detected both hard disks at the same time?, did you run PM from this pc or you used another one?
What OS are you using?

Why not use ghost? if you connect both hard drives to the same cable and boot to the ghost floppy it will give you a gui with both drives and you can copy drives drag and drop or just move files from one to the other.

Answers to your questions: I believe that I
created a drive in the free space. It shows
as having a primary partition and a logical
one; the latter has 4 parts. Only the
primary partition shows in Explorer. I'm
using Win '98SE. I don't understand the Q
about the BIOS detecting more. I ran PM
from this PC. Great idea re: Ghost.

Another solution besides Ghost is the
program you allready used, PartitionMagic.

It has the partition copying function as well
and it works fine when just copying os to
another hd to be used as the primary hd
for that computer.

The new hd has to have as much free space as the os-partitions size is before copying. It has to be also at the beggining of the hd, since it's the os is w98.
