Server 2003 Roles

By bill9 ·
I would like to know if its possible to use a single win 2003 server for multiple roles like Domain server, mail, file & print and web. I have a client who needs a company server (one) currently for most of the above services i mentioned. Overall thing is also to build a company web site that can either be hosted elsewhere or on the single server. The company currently has 6 users who will use most of the servers services for e-mail, file & printer sharing, internet.

Possible yes, advisable?

Yes it's possible for a Win2K3 server to hold all of those roles, in fact, Small Business Server is all of those roles and more, so you may want to check pricing of SBS.

To answer your question...

Yes, a single server can serve DNS, email, file and print, and web functions. Although, it's not recommended, unless you have the appropriate OS, "Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition acts as a printer, file, e-mail, Web and relational database server."

Windows SBS is good for that. But i have to decide either 2003 or 2008, is SBS 2003 applicable to use in the next say 3 yrs before its discontinued by MS.

SBS 2008 looks pretty good. If you're unsure about getting support I would go with 2008. We're using Server 2008 where I work and I'm impressed.
