      What is the function of the server?

      gotta love this.

      before you choose hardware, you have to determine what the company/management/user complaints of their existing structure and what their expectations are for their information technology resources now and in the future. From those interviews, one begins the process of determining what solutions will best correct existing problems and meet current and future expectations of the companies information technology network/infrastructure.

      Thats how you determine what servers to select, why types of servers you need, what operating systems will be needed on the servers.
