Service control manager error

By gmills ·
I have a PC running WinNT4.0 sp6. During boot up I have been getting error messages. When I check the event log there are two errors listed--both are event ID 7000 and the source is the service control manager. One description says "the ppnt service failed to start" and the other says "par1284 service failed to start". In both cases the error goes on to state "the system cannot find the device specified". Any suggestions on how to determine what device the service control manager is look for. Also does anyone know where I can get more information about all the services listed in "services" on the control panel??

I think that the par1284 service was used for bi-directional printing in os2. I'm not sure if nt uses it. Does everything work OK even though you are getting the service failures?

The ppnt service also deals with the parallel port. Have you ever had a zip drive hooked up to the port for backing up or installing but now do not have it hooked up? Maybe a different printer? If so, I wouldn't worry about the failure, it's simply looking for the device and cannot find it so it is not loading the service required for it (this could pertain to the par1284 failure as well).

If everything is running as it should and you're not having any problems I wouldn't worry about the services not starting.
