Set up home printer on the internet

By mcraner ·
I have an HP printer directly connected via ethernet to my router. All my home computers can print to this printer without issue as long as they are connected to the home network, wired or wirelessly.

What I want to do is be able to print while away from home via the internet from other computers, such as a work computer. Since the printer connects directly to the router, there is no need to share it from a pc or use programs like gotomypc.

I've looked around the net quite a bit and pretty much all the help I have found is for sharing a printer that is connected to a PC within a local network.

Can anyone out there please help?

If your router has port forwarding, I guess you could try to designate the printer's IP in the port forwarding on your router, and have requests to your router on a specific port forwarded automatically to your printer's IP address.

Never tried this, but sounds like an interesting project.

here's an example of how to set Linksys' WRT54G router to accept requests on a port to its IP.

Good luck.
