Setting-up FTP Server

FTP Server
I need to set-up an SFTP server. I'm thinking of using WS-FTP Server. I currently have a AMD 950 Desktop PC 256mb sdram, 80GB 7200rpm hard drive, running Windows 2000 Professional.

I'm wondering how well this system will perform as an FTP Server (if at all). How many people can connect to this system at one time? Do I need to use a server Operating System? Should I use a file-server? Ideally, what hardware should I use to set-up a great ftp server?

I also need to give each customer access to specific individualized folders. Can I set-up permissions for each account so that when one customer logs-in they are only presented with the folders they are entitled to?

I really have no idea when it comes to networking hardware. If someone can offer any suggestions or perhaps a web-site where I can find information on setting up an FTP Server it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
EBCDIC

All of what you are asking is possible on the Windows 2000 system you have. You need to install IIS.

Since you're running Windows 2000 Professional, you won't be able to install IIS (its only for 2000 Server and above), but IIS isn't the only FTP server available. Just do a search on http://www.google.com for "free FTP server" and you'll find a tonof FTP servers.

Everything you wan't to do with permissions and access will be possible. Read up on the FTP server's documentation for specific instructions.

Now the type of hardware needed... thats a totally different question. This depends on way too many options (# users, available bandwidth, file sizes), but what you have will definately do for personal use.

If you really have your heart set on WS-FTP, you can find more information at http://www.ws-ftp.com/products/WS_FTP-Server/index.html
