I need some help setting up a desktop PC as a Server. Running XP PRO, 512MB RAM, Celeron D 2.40GHz. Here is the deal, this PC has the Databases for some programs that are used at my bosses office. At the present time the “Server PC” is connected to an 8 port switch. Along with 5 other PC’s, 2 of which are clients for the programs on the Server PC.
Here is the connection details: 512Mbps Cable modem –> Netgear 4 port Router (RP614v2) –> 8 port 3Net Switch.
I am working on setting up the server for Remote Desktop (posted in another question) In order to do this I want to have the other 5 PC’s connect THROUGH the Server PC. I might be confussing myself, but here is the main part of my Q:
Connecting the Cable Modem –> Router –> Server PC(Onboard LAN)
(Adding a PCI 10/100 Ethernet Card)
Server PC(PCI NIC) –> Switch –> all other PC’s to the switch aswell.
Am I on the right track? This would mean the the Server would have to be ON so the other PC’s can connect to the Internet…My basis for this is that it would make it easier for me to set up the Server PC to be controlled remotely, so that my boss can connect to the Server PC and Office Network from home or any other location….please help me ASAP…details would be nice I have never set up a Remote Connection before, I mostly build PC’s and small networks.
All input will help. THANKS
(PLease sheck my other posted Q)
