SharePoint Portal 2001 VAIFy error

Attempting to install SharePoint Portal Server 2001 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server (SP4).Successfully installed onto similar server for testing.However installation fails.Message in errorlog SharePoint Portal Server: [2] CVAIComponent, Error 0x80070426: VAIFy failed SharePoint Portal Server: [0] CVAIComponent::Install, Error setting up VAI.

Listed hotfixes on machine, none claim to conflict with SharePoint but have removed and attempted install again
No host header specified in default web site properties (set to All Unassigned & Port 80)
Checked localhost on port 80 valid way to access default web site
MDAC installed correctly (version 2.7)
At least one drive letter free
Exchange not previously installed
Date on server matches date on domain controller
Cache ISAPI Applications enabled
WWW Publishing service enabled
NT LM Security Support Provider enabled
Net Logon enabled
IIS Admin enabled
Event Log enabled
Protected Storage enabled
HTTP Keep-Alives enabled on default website
DTC is enabled
RPC enabled
Virus scanner disabled during installation
Server not logged on using cached credentials
No COM problems on the machine
In event log no problems with duplicate SIDs
No Office Server Extensions installed
Not in clustered environment
Not upgraded from Windows NT
SMTP installed

Thanks for that but been there already and tried all those suggestions... think we are going to admit defeat and install it on another server.

Sorry, meant to close this question. We have decided to install Sharepoint on another server without all the extras installed. We have had no problem with it on this one. Big sigh of relief...
