Sharing Printer

By defenswens26 ·
I've been trying to share a printer from my wired desktop to my wireless laptop for a long time now and have had no luck. I'm running a Linksys wireless router which my desktop (Sony Vaio) is wired directly into. I have an HP laptop that is connected wirelessly to the router. Both have internet access and run Windows XP. The desktop can access the workgroup but can't access the laptop, I get the "\\Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administratore of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." On the otherhand, the laptop can't even access my workgroup. Saying pretty much the same thing as the desktop except it has "The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." Both of the PCs I'm running have similar accounts (same name, no password). I've tried so many remedies found on the web and have had absolutely no luck.

Whether your running the standard WinXP or another firewall, you will need to open the port for the printer and the computer IP's to communicate. The standard port for printer shares is **00 TCP.

Make sure the printer is shared on the computer it is attached to. Next, go into the firewall on each system and allow the IP of the other computer - they have to be able to talk with each other. Depending on the firewall, you may be able to set up the port at the same time, or you may have to open the port **00 separately.

Either way, this should get you printing from your laptop. This is how I have my network setup.

That got me going on the right track and I did discover that with Norton completely disabled on both comps that it did work. However, when I went to print it sent a sheet through the computer but then got an error and Microsoft Word closed on me. Any idea what that could mean?

What's the error?

Did Word give you an error code? Was it on the with the printer direct connected or the remote peer?
