Microsoft’s Systems Management Server (SMS) will do exactly this and it’s underlying database is SQL v7.0. It’s available as a standalone product or as part of the BackOffice suite.

In addition to the hardware and software inventory functions, it also provides remote control and a fairly capable network packet tracing tool called Network Monitor.

The implementation is not trivial but properly used, it’s an EXCELLENT tool for what you want to do.

Product called ‘Heat” by Goldmine uses an Access db. Lanutil32 by Vector NEtworks and HP OPenview Desktop Asset Manager are also available. None of the implementations are easy regardless of the price. Hp at the topend is probably the best , but difficult to install. runs on Unix/NT. needs the client DMI tools loaded and configured.

I have used a product called ClickNet Pro from Clicknet SW (www.clicknet.com). It gather the information mentioned above. It also stored the information in Access. FWIW, our use of the product was the audit tool for Y2k work.

      Hope this helps…

We are using Tivoli TME to do this, but it is a solution for medium-to-large organizations.

There are small shareware applications that fit on a floppy and can do some of this, but I don’t remember the name of it. You might try FDL Inventory: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10019-100-906842.html?tag=st.dl.10001_103_1.lst.td
