Slow access to Database.

I fell into a position with a company a couple months ago, haven?t been able to figure this one out.
Does anyone have a couple good places to start on troubleshooting slow access to a database on a specific server. Omnis Studio data file segments. This type of data file seems incredible fragile. I had it running on a Windows Server 2003 and kept experiencing corruption to the file. This server?s access speed to the data files was acceptable, but the corruption wasn?t. Moved the data files to a 2003 Storage server. Currently this server hasn?t corrupted the data files (3 months no corruption). This is great but the access to the data for users is barely acceptable. It?s probably 8 times slower then the Windows 2003 Server. All other access to the Storage server shared folders is normal. I have 3 servers all running on GB switch. Testing.. I made a copy of the data file and throw it on an extremely old server (built in 2000) running Server 2003. Read/Write access from this server would run circles around the Storage Server. Which makes no sense. Storage server hardware specs triple everything on the old server. I tried sniffing the wire using Wireshark, I wasn’t able to find anything unusual.
