SLOW PRINITING

By douglas.munyae ·
We have a printer connected to LPT1 port on a win98 workstation and shared as a network printer. When we print Purchase Orders generated using Sunsytems locally the printer prints very slowly but when we print the same purchase order from another workstation through the network the printer prints very fast. When we connect the same printer to another workstation and share on the network it prints slowly locally and fast on the network.

We have change the parallel interface cable but the problem remain the same. This is a problem that I have never experienced before and anybody with ideas how we can fix the problem is welcome to share with us. Thanks Douglas

You didn't mention what type of printer it is. Try checking the local settings in printer properties details tab. Is the printer set to print to LPT1 or is it sent to the share (\\sharename) try both ways. If que is sent to the share, that may be why it's slower. Or the software that you are using has it set to print to the share.

You can also change the print settings to raw.

The printer in quest is an Epson DFX 8000.It is connected toa Compaq deskpro Pentium 1 PC running windows 98 OS. Microsoft office application are able to print very fast in this printer. In this case it does not matter whether the printer is connected locally or shared through the network. I have tried two different Epson DFX 8000 printer and they are all behaving the same. I should point that the problem is specifically evident with the business application software Sunsystem.

The Sunsystem is unix based (Solaris OS Base?)?

You need to look at the lpr or lpd settings on the Sun system. Sounds like it's not properly configured to use the full capabilities of your printer. Increase the baud rate and see if that helps.

just some thoughts on the matter:
You say this happens when its the local PC regardless of which PC. Printing is a resource laden operation. Its possible since your running the software and doing the printing from same PC that it takes up to muchresources and slows to a crawl before able to print.
You say its quicker over LAN. Since the remote PC(printing from) is sending data to the other with printer connected to it, the resources are less on each. In other words the "print server" is handling the print request seperatly from the application requests which is taking place on the networked PC. Id say to increase the RAM but being a pentium 1 you may be lucky to find any. Or if you did it would cost a bundle being so old. Hope that made since as i wasnt sure how to explain in such short space. I could be way off since Im not in front of it but thought id add some possibilities. You could try playing with print driver settings but the issue sounds more related to the application.
