Software inventory.

By Robert K. Kuhn ·
I'm going to hire a temp to do a complete software inventory of all 300+ NT machines that I have here at my company. I don't have time to implement SMS or reconfigure ZEN to do this for me. Is there a shareware program out there that will help assist my temp? I just need software title and if possible the version. Otherwise I'm going to have ths temp go through the Start Program and look at the local hard drive. The temp has 4 weeks (starting on the 7/25/00) to do as much as he/she can forme. Thanks!

Thanks for the links. I tried them out but due to the short length of my project, I was not able to fully implement any of the solutions. But when time permits, I will re-evaluate them. Thanks again!

Here's something that's fast and has a nice interface. But not elegant. You can use it to list all the .exe files on a particular drive (C: or networked). It's free and only 32K in size; it's called Cathy, available at http://members.xoom.com/rvasicek/.

Here are some free software inventory that are recognized by SPA.

(1) SPA Audit Software - SPA's own software audit program (Free).
(2) WRQ Express Inventory, SPA Edition (Free) - gives the user the ability to conduct software audits.
(3) KeyAudit 5.0 KeyAudit (Free) - searches for all Windows or Macintosh applications and will produce indexed lists.

All three could be found at the link below:

Enjoy!

Thanks. I could not get KeyAudit to work. But from what I read about it in the docs, it looks like something that I could have used.

Though not shareware - the following tools do a nice job of software/hardware inventory management for you.
GASP - http://www.gasp.com/ - will do the inventory locally (visit each machine) or remotely (eAudit) from a console. Also provides places to record purchases and produce reports of over/short licenses (most are only interested that you have enough - this tool also reports where you have excess licenses yet to deploy). Creates audit history of changes.

Track-It - http://www.blueocean.com - records and tracks purchasing, training, help desk, inventory, and workstation auditing. inventory can be done local (visit each station) or remote (over network). Captures statup files (autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini, system configuration. Creates audit history of changes.

I got the demo version of GASP, installed it on my Netware server. But found myself spending too much time trying to configure the audits. Otherwise it looks like a great piece of software!

There is a product called Belarc advisor, very easy to use and all info can be put into access database. Check out the site http://www.belarc.com, well worth a look.
