Someone forgot their BIOS Password: Part

By SQL Dude ·
I also forgot to mention that the computer I cannot clear the CMOS on requires the BIOS password before it boots to a disk!

Here is some info from an associate of mine (Ankit Fadia @ programmingforhackers@egroups.com)
The most common method of overriding this password prompt is by trying out the default BIOS passwords. Some common passwords are:

Lkwpeter
j262
AWARD_SW
AWARD_PW
Biostar

Many BIOS also have their default password that can be tried. "j262" opens most versions of Award BIOS it works about 80% of the time. "AWARD_SW" and "AWARD_PW" work on some computers as well, but much less often. In some BIOS shift+s y x z also works. The best way to find out the default passwords of various BIOS is to search at http://astalavista.box.sk which is the best search engine for security related matters.

On many computers a series of keystrokes may crash the password program. To try this, boot the PC and wait for the password prompt, then keep pressing ESC for 50 to 100 times. This will result in the crashing of the password program and the computer will continue booting. However this might work on only selected ma

If you have the manual for the motherboard, look for the jumper that clears the cmos, if not, open up the case and look at the motherboard for the jumper this will take a little time, but it will be on there, the jumper number will be printed on themotherboard, all you do it remove the jumper from say pins 1&2 for 10 seconds (make sure the system is unplugged from the power supply first) then replace the jumper and all should be well. You will have to go into the BIOS again to setup hard drives etc...

If you cannot find the jumper number, email me with the motherboard number and I will tell you which jumper to take off.

Good Luck!

Found this at www.ami.com:

Removing Password Protection in Your BIOS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You only have two options. You can try the default password which is AMI, if that does notwork then your only other option is to discharge the cmos. You will need to look in your manual on how to do this. If this option is not in the manual then you do not have the option to discharge. You will need to contact the motherboard manufacturer.

Try the suggestions for the default passwords. IF NOT.....

When you open the case to try jumper fix be aware of and use ESD (electro-static discharge) precautions. Look at the jumpers on the Motherboard to see if one is labeled reset password or equivalent. Reset per previous advice.

If you can see no jumper (or your motherboard has none) to reset, you can try taking the cmos battery out, but again go overboard on the ESD precautions. IF NOT...

Try every possible password for days/weeks/years (yeah right) - get new motherboard.
