Someone forgot their BIOS password

By SQL Dude ·
Someone brought in an older Packard Bell computer to me with a common problem. "I forgot my BIOS password." Naturally my first thought was to disconnect the CMOS battery and it would reset it.

After searching the board for a half hour without finding the battery, I located a manual for the computer, which told me that the battery is built into a chip which is soldered to the board. So then I located the "CMOS Clear" jumper which I tried with no luck. Please Help.

Computer: Packard Bell Pentium 60
BIOS Manufacturer: AMI

Someone forgot their BIOS password

There are dozens of sites that have a crack for an AMI BIOS. A quick search of "AMI BIOS password crack" gave me 137 hits. Here's one:

What the heck, here's the whole list. But you know search engines, some of these might be porn sites, so use at your own risk.

Of course you'll need to copy the crack to a bootable floppy.

Found this at www.ami.com:

Removing Password Protection in Your BIOS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You only have two options. You can try the default password which is AMI, if that does notwork then your only other option is to discharge the cmos. You will need to look in your manual on how to do this. If this option is not in the manual then you do not have the option to discharge. You will need to contact the motherboard manufacturer.

I have seen before that there is a jumper somewhere around where the BIOS chip is located that will dis-connect the battery power from the chip. I also have seen this not labeled as the Clear CMOS jumper. Try to look for a jumper that is near the CMOS chip and try taking it off and waiting 5 minutes and then putting it back on. Might do the trick.

If you move the "Clear CMOS" jumper and then try to boot the system, that might work. Remember to move it back afterwards though. Also, Packard Bell also had jumpers to clear NVRAM that has helped me in the past.

Good Luck,

Dave
