can anyone tell me what could cause a notebook/laptop Sony Vaio model no.pcg- f305 running win98 to go into hibernate after about 1 min.
have tried restore disk (sony) still the same , everytime I get into alter the power settings it hibernates, itis still on and it will also stay on whilst in dos.
the cpu fan is clean, bios is ok could the HDD be at fault or are we talking new mobo.

Sounds like your battery is knackered. I had a similar problem with an old Dell laptop, and the only way around it was to pop the battery out, use the power supply and boot up, then put the battery back in. This confused the machine into charing thebattery which would then be OK for a few days then problem would re-occur. Replacng the battery solved permanently.

I agree with the previous answer with one addition. Try that suggestion and if that doesn’t work try this. Remove the battery and the HDD then apply AC power. I have to do this when Compaq Armada M700, M300 and 7400 go into hybernation, even though all hybernation settings have been shut off. Once it starts without the HDD and the battery. Shut it down and replace everything. If it continues to have the problem, either immediately or in a few days, you probably have a defective battery.

Won’t be that then if it stays on in DOS! What about removing the hiberfil.sys or whatever the equvalent is in 98 from the root? If would have a job hibernating without that…

This is because your computer is configured to go into hibernate after 1 min. You need to be quick and get the computer on and go in to power management options, and deselect hibernate, or conifgure it the way you want. after 30 mins or only at shut down. hope this helps you just have to get quick at going inthere.

I have tried all the above suggestions to no avail. when trying the power settings it goes into hibernate or so it seems as soon as i try to click ok,I have since tried to reinstall the sony restore disk. wont load all the way, tried deleting all partitions and tried again. now I have no operating system and its still sitting looking smugly at me.
