Sound Card And Modem Problems

By Eddluce ·
I have recently upgraded my home Computer from Win 95 to Win 98. Before this upgrade my modem and sound card worked fine. After the upgrade I cannot get either to work. I have gone through the Win 98 trouble shooting steps. I unloaded Win 98 and everything worked. With my modem I can here it open the phone line but it does not dial (I just here the dial tone). Some of the modem problems seem to coincide with trying AOL (while operating 95)and my modem never worked correctly after installing anduninstalling AOL. I cannot unload 98 the program to uninstall has vanished.

I agree with performing a fresh install instead of an upgrade.

If you have the W98 upgrade version, all you need to do is have your W95 CD handy to prove that you qualify for the upgrade.
Just boot from a W98 startup floppy (www.bootdisk.com)Then, for Windows 98 you need all new device drivers.
The built-in drivers are either non-existant, or very limited.
Start with drivers for the motherboard / chipset.
Then install DirectX (Microsoft)
Followed by the video driver.
Finish with the modem and sound card drivers.

NOTE: some modem drivers require that the driver be installed before you install the card.

This sounds like a classic IRQ conflict, as both the modem and sound card are likely trying to use IRQ 5. Look into the BIOS settings and on the cards themselves to see if they are jumpered or otherwise able to be changed via BIOS setup.

If this is beyond your scope as a troubleshooter, please post a comment in this thread, and include details as to make and model of the modem, sound card, and motherboard/BIOS version, (we can walk you through it). . cheers.

I would suggest first, before wiping your drive and reinstalling windows, to uninstall dialup networking and restarting windows. Then reinstall it. AOL could have corrupted the DUN files. You can do this through add/remove programs, windows setup.I would try that before spending the time reloading windows.

Go to the Control Panel and then Add / Remove Programs. Take the checkmark out of communications and then reboot the computer. Go back to the Communications and replace the checkmark. Click on the details button and take checkmarks out of everythingnot necessary and files will be loaded and after reboot again try your dial up. Might also try to upgrade your modem driver as if it is a voice modem the software for the sound may have corrupted the sound card software.
