sound problem

By rosenci ·
My PC has no sound. It's a Celeron 700 used for gaming. One day the sound simply gave up. The video and sound are on-board. However when I reboot the PC, it emits a single beep. After that nothing. What do I need to do?

The most likely scenario is that the sound driver is corrupted.
You can re-install the driver from the system / motherboard Cd. Or, download an updated version from the system / motherboard / chipset mfgs. web site.
If you need help finding the web site, go to www.driverguide.com
They have a guide to help you locate the mfg, and install the driver.

Other possabilities;
Make sure that the speakers are plugged into the correct jack on the back of the PC, have power, and the volume is turned up.

Check the volume control and mixer settings in Windows. (double click on the speaker icon in the tray, or start, settings, control panel, sounds)

Check device manager (right click on my computer, click on settings) for any problems withyour sound device. ("?" "!" by any device indicates a problem)

If your sound system doesn't show up in device manager, check the BIOS settings at startup to verify that the sound device is enabled. It is likely in the Integrated periphials section.

Good Luck

I have a Celeron machine running Windows 98 that this happens to frequently. When I run Norton Utility's WinDoctor, it fixes it immediately. You might find this solution more desireable (albeit more expense) than reinstalling drivers every time it happens.
