Soundcard isn't detected - HELP!!!

By EStreetJerseyGirl ·
I'm running Windows NT Workstation on my PC at work. I can't get the soundcard to work. Whenever I try to install the audio driver, I get the following message:
"The Windows Sound System board is not detected in your machine."
Any help is VERY much appreciated! Please e-mail JDG474@hotmail.com with any answers. Thank you!!

Soundcard isn't detected - HELP!!!

by dave.osborne In reply to Soundcard isn't detected ...

What is the soundcard? Is it onboard or is it a card? Is this a new card ... did you have on-board sound before? Have you checked to see if the card will work under NT? Did it work before? Have there been any major changes to the system recently? Do you run a virus scan on a regular basis?

I would start by running a virus scan. Then check to see if the card will work under NT. If you have onboard sound, you need to disable it before installing the new card (if any). I would also check both windows update and the soundcard manufacturer's website for updated drivers specifically for win NT. If is is a card, also check for motherboard driver updates along with any BIOS updates (these should also be done if it is onboard sound).

Hope this helps.

If this is an onboard soundcard make sure it is enabled in the BIOS.

NT is a very fussy system and unless the driver is 100% correct it will be rejected. It's been a while but from memory this was always a pain, there are two ways to install sound card drivers in NT.
1. go to control panel and choose Multimedia. Then select add a device and point to the driver disk and hope NT accepts it.
2. The better option hopefully the driver disk will have a setup program and let you install problem free.

A few things to watch out for; IRQ conflicts. In the BIOS disable LPT2 to free up IRQ7. Also NT may allow you to install at IRQ 9. run MSD or winmsd to check what's free.

Hope this helps.

What make and model is the workstation you are using? if it is something like a dell or a compaq they are usually very easy to find drivers and stuff for just from the actual sites...
If it is a custom machine then it will be more difficult if youdont know the soundcard manufacturer.
