soundcard/video card irq crowding

By rtudor ·
I have a agp nvidia geforce 3 video card on Irq 11.
I have a soundblaster live 5.1 sound card that is on 11 and 5 as showing up in the device manager for Windows ME. In the bios I tried to force the soundcard to come up on irg 10. But windowsME still puts it on 11 with the video card. I also have on irq 11 2 ali pci host controllers and 4 ACPI holders for PCI steering. I am experiencing system hard lock ups usually during game play with a cd in the drive. I suspect that the overused irq 11 is a possible problem. I have irq 10 available according to device manager. How can I get the soundcard to move off of Irq 11 and can I safely delete some of those other devices? I have tried moving the soundcard to another slot but it always reinstalls to irq 11..
thanks.

Check your motherboard manual for the default IRQ assigments for each PCI slot.

Un-install the sound card from device manager, and move it to the slot that looks like it will have the least conflicts.
When you boot up, enter BIOS settings and set update configuration / update ESCD to enable.

Updating the drivers for the chipset / motherboard may help also.

Just a note: XP places nearly all devices on 1 IRQ!!

Sometimes you can get lucky when you go into your system BIOS and tell it to Reset Configuration Data (PCI/PnP Sections). Also check to see if all the IRQ numbers are available to PCI/PnP (as opposed to ISA). I'm assuming you've got a system without any ISA (old cards) peripherals...
