Sporadic Mouse Hang-ups

By realityhack ·
I have been having sporadic mouse hang-ups for some time now. They usually only happen when I am minimizing, maximising, or attempting to scroll a window and mostly happen on the Internet though it happens elsewhere as well, depending on what I am doing.
I am running a AMDk6-2 475 clocked at 95X5. 96 megs of ram, an 8mb Intel 740 AGP display.
Mouse is a Logitech M34 series. Updating drivers does not seem to help.

Answer #1: port conflict

Check this out:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Modems
At the top of the modems control panel, click on the Diagnostics tab.

See if your mouse is installed on a COM port that shares its IRQ with a COM port that the modem is on (COM1 & COM3 share an IRQ; COM2 & COM4 share an IRQ.) So, if the modem is on COM3 and the mouse is on COM1, they may be fighting over the IRQ.

Hi,
Another thing to try is to lower the video acceleration. Control Panel / System / Performance tab / Graphics button.

I had this problem with a workstation one time. It was caused by a radio that the person kept near the computer. I've heard of it happening with an electronic cup warmer as well. This is a longshot, but move other electronic devices (especially non computer devices) away from the computer. I recently read of an instance where a VCR near an airport actually sent out so much interferance that it would intermittently shut down electronics in the cockpit of landing planes.

You don't say what MOB you are using. The Intel 740 is only compatible with Intel MOB chipsets. I learned the hard way.
Assuming that is not the problem, you might want to uninstall the Logitech software and run your mouse as either PS2/Serial, using native WIN9x drivers depending on your type of MOB.

Another long-shot: If you are running the latest version of McAfee Virus Scan (Multiplatform Ver. 4.5.0)it has been known to cause jerky behavior (including mouse hangs) on Win 95/98 systems.

If you are running this version, right-click on the VShield icon (in your system tray)and disable the system scan. You will notice an immediate improvement.

Good luck.
