I have an SQL server, and noticed that it was running on 1GB of RAM which i think is nuts was not me that set this thing up, i was thinking that maybe 4GB of RAM would work better and it has loads on SLQ date to update are roster system and its very slow at the min and i think its down to the ram on the thing?

RAM is cheap, add more

Only on the crummiest of MOBO's have I see systems fail because of too much RAM, add more RAM, you can get 1 or 2 gig sticks for between 20-50 bucks. It doesn't even need to be high speed RAM, just having more is better. SQL will use whatever memory it can find, even if it is not actually using it. The more you have, the better.
If its a 32bit OS your running, get yourself 4 gigs, if its a 64bit OS, get yourself the maximum you can install or that you can afford for this machine. More RAM [almost] never hurts.
