Probably going to be easier to uninstall and start

If logging in from the machine you installed it on doesn't work, it's nothing to do with erm remoteness.
Surface Area Config would be for say turning on TCP/IP so you could hit it from another box (given the port (default 1433) was open on the firewall).

Can't say from here but by default. The windows user you were logged on with when you installed it will be the sql admin, and you get the option of setting up an sa account, for sql login (not integrated). Only named pipes will be on by default so you can't connect from another machine, until you use surface area config, which requires you to be logged on as the user you installed it as.

Which server are you trying to connect to?

if you are using the IP of your local machine you will get that error.

Try something like localhost\SQLEXPRESS
