Start of Graphical Install lockup

By fferrant ·
I took an old Compaq Deskpro EX and put in a new Motherboard/Proc (Gigabyte GA-7VKMLS/Duron 1.2). When I run the Windows2K install booted from the CD the install freezes as soon as it gets to the "Starting Windows 2000 Setup" prompt which means it's going into the graphical part of the install.

I've replaced the CD-ROM, HDD, Cables, RAM, and Power Supply with no luck. On a hunch my co-worker suggested I use Linux and it worked! I can use this same media on a different machine and have it work.

I recently updated the BIOS to v.F5. No luck. Help.

Sounds like a compatibility issue with one of your drivers. When the "starting windows 2000 setup" screen appears, try hitting "F8" key and see if the option "VGA Mode" is available. If so, then try running it that way.

I loved the idea, however F8 didn't make any difference. I'd love to hear any other ideas.

my thoughts:
1) try another video card
2) make sure BIOS level anti-virus is disabled
3) make sure latest BIOS update is installed
4) what size hd what size installation partition?

seems that's due to certain version of compaq system configuration utility. ms gives this link to compaq for more info:

I finally figured it out. Thanks for your comments. I had to select "F5" during the start up to pick out the proper APCI (in my case standart). I'd never heard of this before, but found it on Technet.
