Stolen Mail??

By Oz_Media ·
Have a customer who has recently been getting email on a 'hit or miss' basis. Some mail comes in no problem, other mail that USED to have no problem is not getting through. The sender gets nothing bounced back, the GWAVA spam protection (which I have also tried while shut down)has no log or anything blocked from that address. If I send TEST mail, no problem, others send TEST mail, no problem. ISP has DNS resets every 30 minutes. I have scanned BOTH PO's, no virus. I have done domain rebuilds DNS reset etc. SOME mail still doesn't get through and it used to.

I am wondering if it is being intercepted somehow, and if so, why only SOME mail?

Has ANYONE seen anything similar or have any ideas as to where to turn next?

Thanks,
OM

Are there any similarities between the mails that go missing? Harder to track, but it might provide some insight.

Any systemic problems on the email server? If it is only one account being affected, then I'd guess not. Other than that, I have no guess.

Thanks but there are no similarities between lost messages.

Appreciate you input,

I believe email can be intercepted through a dns as well as files and instant nessages and the like, through either packets or through a running process. perhaps change your internet alias, or email alias. Might be a thing to consider. good luck man.

This is sitewide and addresses are prpinted on cards so the actual address must be active.

Thanks for trying though, I appreciate the support.

Hi Oz,

Just a shot in the dark.

A while back (over 2 years ago) I was having problems sending emails to several friends.

The common thread was that they all used the same ISP.

Turned out that an update I had installed for IE / OE had a conflict with their ISP's mail server.

Once the ISP updated the mail server, the problem was fixed.

Like your situation, the mails were not being bounced, they just disappeared.

My temporary work-around was to use my Yahoo account to send mail to them.

Just a Shot in the Dark! Gee Chas, now I have an Ozzy tune in my head, that aint so bad though is it? ;-)

Well once again I am thanking you for your input. I really appreciate you trying Chas, no common patterns though on this one, mail is from all over the world.

As for Yahoo, this is sitewide so it wouldn't make my client happy, they use GroupWise for technician dispatch, online document library and collaboration, it is a staple to them.

I did actually get a SPAM report since doing a full unattended rebuild so that's very promising. Fingers crossed for tomorrow, I'm done for now, too much work and no play (you know how well I accept that!).

Cheers,
OM

Thanks everyone, I appreciate everyone's input.

Unfortunately, I have tried what I can and this is a wired instance.

Mail to ALL users is screwed up, some goes through others don't, no pattern to trace, that's what makes it so daunting, no pattern so I can't replicate it.

At one point I noticed it was all mail from outside the province, I know, email doesn't need an area code. That was as common as it got.

I have since restored the PO and MTA from backup and ran a full unattended repair on the entire system. I have left site now and due to time zone restrictions will have to see what happens in the morning. I did manage to get GWAVA to start sending me admin reports so I think it may be fixed but will have to wait and see.

Thanks again everyone, I know i didn't give you much to work with but that's all I had myself.

I will accept everyone's answers though as I always appreciate input from the TR peers, it's the best help you can get.

Cheers,
OM
