Stuck on setup

By shaun ·
I just purchased a hard drive replacement and when I try to install Windows 98, setup freezes on a screen that says, "setup is installing files required.....". The computer finds the hard drive during power up and when I fdisk or scandisk from the 98 boot disk, but it will not install Windows. If anyone can help me, it will be greatly appreciated.

How big is the hard drive? and how did you partition it?

Windows 98 has had some problems with drives of over 32MB. There is another problem at 60MB.

To aviod this, I always setup my W98 drives with just under 32MB as the maximum size for theprimary DOS partition, and set up the rest as an extended DOS partition with no logical drive larger than 32GB.

Also, how much RAM do you have?
There is a W98 bug for ram larger than 511MB.
This is VERY conbfiguration dependant. It is possiblethat the new drive has brought your system into the bug if you have 512MB or more RAM.

All drive sizes should be in GB not MB.

My fingers get lost on the keyboard sometimes.

Thanks to another peer for pointing this out to me.

Before getting too excited how old is your system? The new systems will run just about any size drive with 98SE. The older systems wont. See Windows support. They do have some issues that are related almost exactly to your problem

Hope this helps

How old is the BIOS on the motherboard? Older BIOS don't support larger drives. Update your BIOS. Also, did your drive come with a setup disk? Maxtor drives ship with Max-Blast. This sets up a wedge to support larger drives. If one came with the drive I suggest using it.
