Stuck with WEP -- can I harden it?

By hrhsoleil ·
I have potential security issues on my wireless LAN because my equipment is older and I can?t use WPA. I'm worried that my data is vulnerable. If I increase my WEP key length from 40 to 128 or greater, will this help?

Stronger encryption does mean stronger security. But a downfall is that the more encryption, the more time it takes to transfer data.

Im not sure how many users you have on this point on average, or the speed of this point, but if it is only 10-15, I dont think you will even notice a differance.

In the future, when the budget comes in or your ready, I would upgrade your hardware, and use more secure WPA.

WEP is better than nothing. you can opt for high encryption which protects the shared key. you can also opt to configure the wireless router/access point to only allow trusted stations to make a connection.

another [if available] is not broadcast the station.

In addition, if you are in control of both ends, you can use MAC address access lists. You can also use a VPN connection.
