Sun / WinNT/2K Browser Blues

By jty ·

Basically I have a Sun O/S server, two Win2K servers, and a load of NT4 Workstations. All connected through a single switch.

I have inherited this problem from my predecessor, who set up the network with a basic level of knowledge. Hence all I know is what i've discoved for myself so far!

The Sun O/S box is currently the MB (Master Browser), one of the Win2K boxes WAS (BB) Backup Browser.
The problem is that software we relay on uses the browser list, and for some reason it becomes unavailable every so often. At present the only way to resolve it is to manually force an election using browstat.exe and restart the NT4 clients. Win2K picks it back up without a restart.
The big question is why is the browser list becoming unavailable??
I found that once elected the MB had a perfect BL (browse list), and replicated this to the BB, as it should. However, from then on no updates to the list were replicated, and very soon the MB stopped acting as MB until an election was forced.
I have ensured all systems (NT4/Win2K) are now not able to become MB or BB's. Leaving the Sun box as the only possible MB. However it is still needing to be forcefully re-elected every so often.
Any ideas?
I don't know Sun O/S very well (I was an MS consultant for 5 years), but am thinking of making the Sun box a non browser, and using the Win2k servers as MB & BB.
