SUS Client Update

By camb ·
I have a SUS server running. How do I point my XP machines to update from it rather than the Internet. From what I read, I need a "different" version of the updater software. I have service pack 1 installed on all my machines. It does not give the option to choose. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Cam

there is also a technical white paper available at the SUS site. Has everything on configuring both the server and client computers as well as a troubleshooting guide.

here's a link to the deployment white paper

you want to download the white paper 2.5mb

Refer to page 49 of the white paper.
Deploying the Automatic Updates Client

You can install the updated Automatic Updates client on your clients by using one of the following methods:
? Install Automatic Updates client using the MSI install package.
? Self-update from the STPP version Critical Update Notification (CUN).
? Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3).
? Install Windows XP SP1.
? Install Windows Server 2003.

Configuring the Automatic Updates client software
Once you have installed the Automatic Updates software, you will want to configure it either by using the Automatic Updates user interface or using policy-based configuration.
Before configuring the client computer, you will want to make the following decisions:
? 1. How do you want Automatic Updates to function?
? 2. Do you want Automatic Updates to pull updates from Microsoft Windows Updates servers or from a server running SUS on your local network?

the White Paper explains in detail [step by step] on how to configure SUS server and client computers. If your running Small Business Server you'll want the Small Business Server white paper which can be found here

from my experience you dont need to update the client on windows xp or 2000 machines you just need to add the administrative templates for gpo so you can tell it where to get the updates, when to download them, when to install them etc. if you have sp2 on the machines it even gives you more options. you should see an .adm file in the sus server files when you extract it. load up gpo and on administrative templates click add, and select that file. then drill down to automatic updates and you can set your options.
