SuSE crash - hardware or software?

By jdclyde ·
The system has frozen twice this morning (I was just informed)

Running SuSE SLES10.1
Server is an IBM x230.
Using a Raid card, running Raid5 with 4 SCSI hard drives (nine gig each).

In the /var/log/messages log, I am seeing this.

Oct 13 10:11:23 server kernel: hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Oct 13 10:11:23 server kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Oct 13 10:11:53 server kernel: hda: ATAPI reset timed-out, status=0x80
Oct 13 10:12:28 server kernel: ide0: reset timed-out, status=0x80
Oct 13 10:12:28 server kernel: hda: status timeout: status=0x80 { Busy }
Oct 13 10:12:28 server kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Oct 13 10:12:28 server kernel: hda: drive not ready for command
Oct 13 10:12:58 server kernel: hda: ATAPI reset timed-out, status=0x80

The only IDE device would be the dvd rom, and that was not in use. It LOOKS like a hardware issue, but not sure where to start.

Thanks,

jd

Do not know if this will help..

But have you tried to replace the DVD drive and see if it solves your issue.
Just a thought.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

I haven't done anything to it yet

And I guess that makes as much sense as anything, huh?

30 minutes until lunch time, so will take the server down then and swap it out.

Of course, I will not know if it is the problem for some time. ~sigh~

Will keep posting as I watch the log files.

Thanks for the ideas.

Well you did say that the only device on IDE was the DVD drive.

The DVD drive device is usually written into the Linux kernel, so if this did go belly up then that is why you got the error log file.
Unless you have a DVD disk in there and it is trying to read it.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

There was nothing in the drive

And turns out it was a CD drive, not a DVD. I pulled it anyways and dropped a new DVD rom in.

I will be going in and clearing out the log file so I can see if anything new gets added.

Thanks again.

Not necessarily JD Sometimes the Kernel address the SCSI

Controller as a IDE Device and lists them accordingly.

Try checking the SCSI Drives for Function run the makers testing utility and see if they are OK.

This looks like a HDD Error here.
