      Hi!

Those beeps sounds like my computer did once. The problem then was that my graphics card wasn’t properly seated in its slot.

      Best regards

      Thomas

You didn’t state which Bios you have, but looking at the error code for award and ami bios, your indication is most likely a memory problem. Try reseating the memory. Then if you have simms take two out at a time to help isolate the faulty module.

Look in the manual; there will be a list of error codes associated with the beeps. Failing that, go to the packard bell website and look it up/emial them the indications. Different bios’s have different meanings for the beep codes.

It is definately a video adapter problem. Generally the Packard Bell has a built in video adapter so disable it on the motherboard and insert a new video card in the PCI or ISA slot to check out the problem.

The FIX is… reseat your video card,,, i had this issue myself… the adapter is slight out of the connector.. reseat it.. this will fix…. if not then try re-installing the video driver.. it should not come to that!!

What is your BIOS producer? You may see it on chip on motherboard or during your startup process. Different BIOSs are using different beeps types

If your systems is a standard AT type PC then the 1 long 3 shorts is a Video memory error. Check your Video memory.. card may work with deffective chips.

      Good luck

This is a really commen one!! Just sounds as if your V-card has come lose. Try making sure it’s correctly seated if it is and your still getting the fault try and clean the connections with a soft cloth and some WD-40 spray. It might also be that the memory on the card is dead so you’ll have to replace the card unforunatley. Hope this helps! 🙂

In reply to your question. Dependant on whether you have a motherbord with onboard VGA and shared memory, you could spend quite some time locating the cause. If you have mem on your m/board and an onboard VGA you are likely to have to change the m/board itself or buy a new VGA and disable the onboard VGA via the bios. Or if your VGA is a plug in (PCI) just try replacing it. You may also have the type with onboard VGA but sharing the system memory, in which case a faulty SIMM or DIMM may be at fault. If you have any further questions mail me direct or check out my website http://www.custommadepcs.co.uk.

If there is no other activity after the beep sequence, it could be a problem in cmos.
It may benefit you to unplug the CPU and drop your cmos configurations.

NOTE please write down your current configuration so you can reinstall them. (drive type etc.)

Try these POST Beep Codes to help you in troubleshooting boot up problems (for the IBM300’s though, but might be similar).

      Beep Code: Probable Cause:
      1-1-3 CMOS write/read failure
      1-1-4 Bios Rom checksum failure
1-2-1 Programmable interval timer test failure
      1-2-2 DMA initialization failure
1-2-3 DMA page register write/read test failure
      1-2-4 RAM refresh verification failure
1-3-1 First 64k RAM test failure
1-3-2 First 64k RAM parity test failure

Depending on what BIOS you have if it is AMI BIOS it means conventional/extended memory failed. If it is IBM and or few others it is a faulty peripheral controller usually the video card (VGA/EGA). Check the video card to be sure iti s seated properly and hasn’t popped loose or shifted sometimes over time this can happen even if you don’t move it or bump it. Hope this helps.

The AMI Bios beeps once to tell the user everything is OK. The beeps mean some thing is wrong. This is coded so you can check its manual or their website for the meaning of these beeps. You could alsocall your engineer to check the inside of your PCwhether all the cards etc. are proper.

The BIOS is very probably an AWARD Bios. As for the beeps, the first “long” beep is the standard boot beep. The 3 short beeps is a post error code. If you were to consult a list of these codes for the award bios, you would find that 3 beeps is a Graphical Initialization Error, which in most cases means that the graphics card is not seated properly, but could be something more serious such as a circuit fail on your graphics card.. But try first checking that it is seated correctly.

It’s unanimous!!! Definitely Video problem. It’s either fried, card isn’t seated properly, or the DB-15 is not secure on the back of the computer.
