System File error

By jrbigsky ·
on boot up in a computer I have with win98se I get this message.

System file error!
The following system files have been replaced with older versions by a program you resently ran. These files are currently in use and cannot be repaired.
Windows may not run correctly until you exit and restart windows so these files can be repaired.

C:\WINDOWS|SYSTEM|DDEML.DLL

if you just click ok it boots into desktop ...if you reboot it just repeats this message with no repair nor does scan disk re[air it/
1) what is thhis file for and where do I find it on windows disk
2) any ides to fix this?

First a few technical details and information on this file and associations.
DDEML.DLL = DDE Management library
Associated Program DDESHARE.EXE = DDE ShareManager
Function Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
A form of interprocess communication (IPC) implemented in the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. Two or more programs that support dynamic data exchange (DDE)can exchange information and commands. Using DDE ShareDDE Share is a tool for managing dynamic data exchange (DDE) conversations over a network. With DDE Share, you can create, modify, and delete DDE shares so programs on one computer can communicate and share data with programs on other computers. You can also define security restrictions on DDE shares Network DDE serviceA service that provides network transport and
security for DDE conversations.
You can try to extract this file from the Win98 CD by using the system file checker utility. Try to start your computer in safe mode by pressing F8 on the keyboard when starting Windows appears on your screen and select safe mode from the menu. Hopefully this will at least start your operating system and allow you to search for and replace the file in question. Good Luck!

As mmeritt mentioned above system file check and your recovery/windows98 cd should take care of this, at the run prompt run SFC and that will bring up the system file checker. Now note this should also give the option to shut the message off and accept the ddeml.dll as the latest and greatest version so make sure you know what you are replacing here and read his url first.
Good luck!
