I recommend you doing the following things:

Software

1.Run scandisk and defragmentation on all partitions/drives

2.Ensure that they have a good anti-virus program with recent updates. (Norton is excellent)

3.Clear out the temp directories.

4.Educate them about the importance to doing these things.

5.Insure that the OS has the latest service packs and patches.

6.Upgrade their browser to a more current one. (basically runs Windows update from IE 5.0)

7.Adjust the resolution if it looks bad.

8.Try to upsell them to a system maintenance program. (Norton System Works and/or Norton Utilities) It will automate a lot of these things.

9.You may want to sell them basic tutorial services on using Windows, etc.

Hardware

1.First I would acquire a good diagnostic tool that will analyze the system for you and run reports showing what needs to be done.

2.Recommend upgrades. Easiest ones would be RAM, better video card, better sound card, Internet keyboard, better mouse (optical mouse is a good upgrade), better monitor, better speakers.

3.Vacuum inside of case/tower to clear out the dust.

4.Label where things plug in for them. (maybe color code them)

I hope thingss things help you some andgood luck!

Another thing that you could do for them that is often taken for granted is educate them on the importance of a good backup program and routine backups. This would provide for additional upsells.

You could also ghost the system for them in the event that they lost everything. Norton Ghost is the industry standard for this.

Personally, I like the TechRepublic "The Ultimate Preventative Maintainance Checklist" found in the downloads at this site.

Is an optical mouse really necessary??
Unless your doing graphical work I don't really see the point in one. You may be able to tell the difference bettwen an $80 optical mouse and a $10 ball mouse from wal-mart but is the difference really necessary?
Unless you've got some Quake tournaments goin on during work :)

My 2 cents,
Brian Wright
