System refusing all windows O.S

By kagi87 ·
I have an assembled computer with a motherboard supporting Intel Pentium III microprocessor before it was using Windows 98 with difficulties every time closing any opened application with "illigal operations" messages . Then after I tried to install Windows 2000 and Xp but always installation is cancelled before its completion
I thought its a problem of the RAM and I replaced the it but still the problem persists so what can I do to get my system work because I tried to solve what I think might be the problem but I didn't succeed.
Please Help

How does the installations stop?
Try changing the data cables.
Run scandisk with surface scan and see if the HDD has any bad sectors.
Cheers.

It would be helpful to know what you mean by the installation is cancelled. There must be an error or does the system just stop responding at some point durring the setup.

Simplify the install process. First check the BIOs settings and disable the virus feature. Use only what's needed. Disable com ports, printer ports, power saving and if there onboard sound, nic etc. These features can be added one at a time later and will help in isolating the problem. Just install the video card. The other devices like modems etc can be added later. Fdisk and format the drive. As mentioned run scandisk from the DOS prompt including a suface scan. In case there's a problem with the CDROM drive, copy the install files to a folder to the hard drive andrun the setup from there. Use custom install and only select the main features of windows.
This is a very minimal installation process and if there's a conflict it will be exposed as you add the device or setting that's causing the problem. Afterwards start by enabling the the BIOs features like the com and printer ports. Then install the rest of the cards one at a time. After everything is working then you can install the rest of the windows features you desire.

Good luck

If you could give the complete error message that would be helpful in determining the kind of problem you are having...

It could possibly be a virus, please let us know more info

I suggest the following procedure:

Boot from a W98 or W2K STARTUP floppy.

If the drive is formatted as a FAT32 volume, the W98 would be best.

At the DOS prompt, run fdisk /mbr

Run fdisk again,
delete all logical drives and partitions.
Re-boot, run fdisk a 3rd time.
partition the drive as desired.

For fdisk tutorials, check the links at www.fdisk.com/fdisk

For an article on partitioning strategy, check out www.aumha.org

Re-boot after setting up the partitions.

Formatthe C: drive
format c:

Now, install the CD, and you should be able to cleanly install the desired version of Windows.

I agree with all 4 responses.I had a similar problem, Win XP refused to install on a hard disk because it was an old ATA33. The istallation simply stopped as you said with, Windows cannot continue the installation. The only way is to change the Disk.
