I purchased a HP notebook computer 1.5ghz, 512 MB Ram, 30gig HD, CR/RW/DVD and it came with Windows XP Home installed. Recently no matter what the thing freezes up, even when it just sits for a short period of time, short of wiping it uot and re-installing everything, I have done everything I know..Any sugestions?

Check the Task Manager to see what programs are running in the back ground, deslect anti virus and other programs to see if this will clear the problem

Update the video drivers and check to make sure that your system is not overheating.

I would check to see if you can load some hardware monitoring software to make sure it's not over heating.

There are other things you can do like unoading device one at a time to see what is causing the problem, running in safe mode to see what happens to the machine then...

http://www.MemTurbo.com

I use memturbo from the above site to manage memory leakage in all my MS O/Ss, suggest you download the trial version and set it to run automatically and see if it makes a difference, if the problem is due to memory leakage this will have an effect.

Hi..

Sounds like it might be set up incorrectly in Power Options.

Go to Control Panel .. then Power Options.
At the drop-down menu, select Laptop.

Next .. at the bottom, make sure that the time selected for shutdown is long enough for you to use your computer. (maybe just short of the time that your battery will give out) On mine, I don't shut down the hard drive at all when on AC power.

Good luck,
Enbee
