Tactics of the Wi-Fi alliance

By Mark W. Kaelin Editor ·
In July, the Wi-Fi alliance warned that they would revoke the certification of members who launch wireless products using standards that have not yet been approved by the group.

The alliance stated that its certification process is important because it tests whether equipment from different manufacturers is interoperable. The group claims that without this directive, customers cannot be sure that a kit from one vendor will work with another, ultimately jeopardizing the widespread adoption of wireless technology.

Are the tactics of the Wi-Fi alliance strangling the wireless evolution? In other words, without such initiatives from the Wi-Fi alliance, would the industry be moving along at a faster rate?
