Ribbon connection order for IDE
I have a hard drive and a CD-ROM drive connected as master & slave respectively to my mobo IDE1 primary slot.

Does it (technically) matter which device is connected to the central connector on the ribbon and which is connected to the end (last) one?

doesn't matter a bit, as long as the devices are setup properly as Master and Slave

Works in 999 out of a 1000 cases, the exception is older first generation IDE devices ( those from the 386 era ), and those unusual and rare beasts who use the C/S ( cable select ) method of drive designation.
