“The DSA Object Cannot be Removed”

I am having difficuty with an issue which basically involves our domain ‘thinking’ that we still have an old domain controller. This was demoted and removed some time ago however some of the old metadata appears to be still hanging around.

I am aware of the NTDSUTIL.exe tool which can manually remove the old metadata, however this is only possible if you are able to connect to the offending server – unfortunately in this case this is not an option!

The error I receive when I try to delete this server from the server list says:

“The DSA object cannot be deleted”

I have been doing my research on how to resolve this but every article I have found on this refers only to connecting to the server, which as I have said is no good to me.

Can anybody help? There MUST be a way of doing this without having to connect to the server surely????

    All suggestions gratefully welcomed!

    Cheers

    Kevin

I think this should do it for you:

      http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=216498

I had a similar problem and it worked for me. I did not have to do all the steps. For example, the computer was already gone from the site, so I didn’t have to use NTDSutil. This article does, however, tell you how to use it to remove metadata for a DC that is no longer available to connect to. Note that it says that you need to connect to a server that is NOT the server you want to delete.

      Hope this helps!
