The Emperor has no Clothes

By john.a.wills ·
My first mainframe was an ICL 1900 with GeOrgE on top of Executive. I went on to TR440 with BS3, CDC Cyber with I forget what o/s, Prime 500 with PrimOS, HP-3000 with MPE, IBM with ISPF on top of TSO on top of MVS and finally UniSys 2200 with I forget what o/s. For the last 5 years I have been on HP-UX: it is definitely the poorest mainframe programming environment I have worked in: no fixed line numbers and therefore no XRef and no comfortable editing, etc. So why is Unix so popular? It is a big step back from 30 years ago.
