In the recent article titled “The VPN Advisor examines software vs. hardware solutions, SSL issues” I would like to post some additional informaiton regarding SSL VPN.
Overall, I agree with the article in when implementing a VPN Gateway, Server,or Appliance solutions monitoring the performance of CPU, memory, and network utilization is critical. These solutions will most likely continue to dominant the market due to the integration experience and the current installed base.
As for SSL, I disagree with the comment ?a major limitation to the SSL-based approach is that users can access only Web server applications?. There is currently an SSL VPN solution called Neoteris (www.neoteris.com) that offers the capability of accessing File server files on non-web servers (Word, Excel, etc.) and client/server applications via an SSL connection with the customization tool. This does not require any additional software on the client side and supports multiple authentication sources. For example, with the customization tool fat client applications such as outlook can be configured to access data via the SSL connection. This customization can be expanded for other fat client applications as well.
